....before this trial becomes a farce.

have said before that Saddam Hussein should not be tried in Iraq. I say it again. The trial is fast becoming a farce as Saddam continues to insist that he has been tortured---as have some of the other accused. We are now subjected to shows of "tennis elbow", minor scratches and a singular lack of evidence that anyone could have abused the men behind the barrier. How we wish that their victims had only suffered "tennis elbow". (I allude of course to one of the accused exposing his elbow on TV yesterday).

The truth will out I am sure but I can't help feeling that Ramsey Clark is orchestrating events now . But Why? Surely Clark should never have been allowed near Saddam. What the hell is going on? Perhaps Doctor Guy can elucidate for me, as Clark's presence makes this entire scenario somewhat surreal. One more point: No fool on this earth is going to torture Saddam in his air-conditioned, hotel-room-like cell unless someone put Lindy England in there with him. Oh, surely not. It would be a gross mistake to shake Saddam's hand in case he developed arthritis in his pinky finger.

Jokes aside, This trial is going skewed even though the judge is to be admired for his bravery and sensibility. I say hand Saddam over to Carla Del Ponte, chief war crimes prosecutor at the Hague and let him stew like Milosevic until all the "truth will out". Let it go on for five years if it has too---present proceedings are getting nowhere.

Ms Del Ponte is hated as much as she is admired but she, like a tenacious Toy Pomeranian, hangs on and bites and gnaws until she sees the Serb and Croat murderers reeled in one by one (she brought one in last week). Let her have Saddam as well.

Seriously, Saddam must be moved from Iraq and placed where fear is less of a factor in his court appearances. And get Ramsey Clark the hell out of there!

The trial is a farce, but it is also cathartic for the Iraqis.  So many want to see him get his just deserts, and that is why it is being allowed to proceed, circus and all.  I think Justice would be served better with Carla, but this is not Justice.  This is blood.

As For Ramsey Clark, it is the Andy Warhol maxim.  He is turning it into a farce because he A- cant, and B- craves the limelight.  Fame is a narcotic that has no antidote, and Clark has finally found a way to get back in the headlines.  And he is milking it for all it is worth.  He cares not a whit for Saddam, just for the headlines.
