Guantanamo Bay and its comings and goings don't shock me in the least. It is a prison of exraordinary ruthlessness overseen mainly by the CIA and the British MI5. It is also a prison wrought by fear and harsh punishment. The fear emanates from the shocking and traumatic events of 9/11. The harsh punishment is retribution for any person who dare attack the United States.
Don't get me wrong. Retribution of some sort is necessary for such a heinous deed. The methods of retribution worry me. Any human being suspected of co-opting into the bigger picture (no matter how), should face punishment. It is the method of punishment and the length of incarceration that worries me. Did the US and Britain decide that these men were unworthy of any trial of any sort or did they decide that four or five years of ruthless imprisonment might make them repent?
No, it did not work that way. Here an example had to be set and interrogation had to take years to bring, unfortunately, few conclusions. I fear the US was in panic mode when these people were rounded up but it seems the naughty pupil had to sit in the corner with the dunce's hat for years, not minutes.
This quasi-punishment should never have happened. The CIA and the MI5 should have had solutions from the beginning: Bringing these men to trial!
I get the feeling that Bush and his cronies didn't have the slightest idea what to do with an Afghan farmer owning a rifle, so they hid him from the world.
My readings tell me that the CIA and MI5 are the sneakiest bastards on the planet. To save the World they will flout every rule in the book including the Geneva convention. Gitmo should be closed down now!
