....or another expected African mess!

Dear Joeusers,

Sudan has been in the news lately. I have lived in Africa for 50 years and I can tell you it is no surprize. Every African story is a nightmare, a tale of horror and a reflection on how the poorer African countries cannot get their act together.

The Dufor region in the Sudan is subject to ethnic cleansing and the government (please choose) is: unable to do anything, can't do anything, won't do anything. The DRC (Congo) is a maelstrom of ethnic cleansing, greedy militias and incompetent government. Somalia is awash with warlords and an infrastructure that is none (as in second to none).
Liberia has no political infrastructure and a broken economy. Sierra Leone struggles to get on line but it's economy, government and stability is hampered by three brains and one spine. The Zimbabwe government blames everything on the UK and then let their people starve for the sake of a cause.

Many dictators and heads of government in Africa are corrupt, stupid and racist. They are consumed by greed, an unnatural awareness of ethnic differences and a creed of self-importance. Unfortunately, many blame their problems on colonial rule, apartheid and greedy British interests.

If the leaders in Africa (and many don't deserve the title), are going to wake up (Botswana, Namibia and The Republic of South Africa excluded,), they are going to have to move away from past incriminations, past guilt complexes and past hatred, and turn to the today of Africa.

Today means getting to grips with today's problems and solving them without blaming problems on the past. The past is awash with blunders---the present has many more promises.

What of the Sudan, it's Dufor region; The DRC and it's vast country full of howling militias; the Liberias and the Sierra Leones?

A larger UN presence is needed. A bigger force is required. For God's sake, if a big fist is needed in Iraq, it's needed here too.

Africa, with its poverty, violence and horrific lifestyle needs help too.

I doubt Africa is ever going to change in our lifetimes. Nobody has any interest in it anymore. Even if the U.S. did have an interest, it wouldn't be able to "invade" Africa and oust the dictators without taking much criticism from the rest of the world, who would rather see Africans raped and murdered than safe and free under U.S. occupation.
