Was it a piece of cake?

I borrowed a friend's Volkswagen Beetle in 1966 and went for my test. It involved a run around the block and a stop in front of the licencing office--no reversing, no hills, no parking. I did not have to take a learner's licence as I had a motorcycle licence. I'm sure it was the easiest test in South Africa. But, I did know how to drive having done so since the age of 16 (illegally of course). We had a Hudson and I practised going in and out of the garage. Then we had a Volvo and I learnt left-hand drive and spinning around the block. My son was driving at age 10 and drove my car into a tree! Oh well, that's how we learn.

How did you get your licence? Was it luck or agonising strife?

Frankly I think it is far too easy to get a license to operate a two ton missile on our roads.

As I recall my driver's test involved driving around the block without hitting anything, parallel parking, and performing a 3 point turn on a narrow street. That was pretty much it.

OMG. My oldest turns 10 next month and never in a million years could I imagine him behind the wheel. You are a brave dad!!

I took driver's ed (heh, our teacher, a coach let us pull all sorts of stunts, and I hardly ever drove since I was the only girl in my group and I didn't want to drive; actually most of the time he had us drive him to his errands, LOL).

When I turned 16 I took a written test and barely passed.

I never have had to do the actual driving test and I'm thankful. I CANNOT parallel park. AT ALL. I'm pretty much a crappy driver, but I have managed to avoid accidents.

I did take another written test recently to renew my DL, and I aced it.

Yep, same here except no Parallel parking.

No parallel parking, but the three-point turn, and the driving up and down and around and stopping when the instructor said to! It was nerve wracking for fear of making a mistake, but I got it!
