Travellers and tourists are advised to be cautious in their choice of a destination in Africa. See the link below (which I'll comment on), and I've added a few because they have been left out . Avoid the following places if you want to travel in Africa. As per link:

Liberia--putting itself together under Mrs Leaf. Could be safe in future.
Guinea--very unstable at the moment. Demonstrations against government. Nothing for tourists here.
Kenya--Lovely destination. Crime the big problem in the cities esp. Nairobi.
Burundi--Crime levels high. Rebel attacks against capital, Bujumbura.
Nigeria--Do not go near Port Harcourt. Crime is excessive in Lagos.
Algeria-Nice tourist destination (Mediterranean coast especially). Terror attacks lately. Caution needed.
Central African Republic--Tensions high in this country. Rebel forces. Best avoided.
DRC--Stabilising after elections but many areas unsafe. Dangerous conditions for residents and visitors.
Cote D'Ivoire (Ivory Coast): Tensions high. Security situation remains tense and potentially volatile.
Sudan-Khartoum relatively safe. Anywhere outside is a no-no. If you work for UN stay away.
Eritrea-Asmara relatively safe. Tensions due to conflict with Ethiopia.
Somalia--A big red NO. Most unstable country in Africa. Avoid at all costs.
Chad-Due to clashes along borders with Sudan, non-essential travel not advised.

And a few more that I have added, not because the State Department is out of date, but rather because I know this continent well.

Republic Of South Africa: Tourist haven but serious crime and muggings prevalent in cities. Caution at all times especially at night and take care with belongings.
Lesotho--avoid during present elections. Beautiful tourist destination. Tourists advised to stay over border.
Zimbabwe--Tourists welcome but shortage of basic foodstuffs and over-eager policing.
Equatorial Guinea--unstable nation not suited to tourism.
Sierra Leone--still unstable--not suited to tourism.

Sheesh, Africa sounds like a really dangerous place. Don't worry, there are many great countries to visit!

Hey, can you tell me where it IS safe to go at the moment? Africa has so much strife, it is hard to keep up with it all.

The world sure has changed....used to be Africa ( I thought) was a fantastic place to take a vacation and enjoy the thrill of a safari....so sad...

Guess I'll have to rely on documentaries about the place

I second Maso's comment. It would be nice to know where is actually good to go. I"ve always wanted to visit Morocco or some other exotic locale like that!

This is very nice of you to do Adnauseam!
