Everyone has heroes simply because there are people we admire and look up to. Heroes come in all shapes and sizes and may be from politics, sport, the arts and entertaintment or, in fact any walk of life. A hero can be from history or the present. Most of all a hero is a)a representive of things we aspire to, or, a person we would defend in any debate because of qualities that have influenced us. A hero can be a brother, a Saint or a pop singer. One of my wife's heroes is Bob Dylan. Some of us may not have any heroes at all.

I do, and I've made a short list of 5 :

1. Top of my list is Nelson Mandela. "Madiba" is one of the World's most revered statesmen.
2. Two golfers (I'm cheating). Ernie Els and Retief Goosen (they are South African, rank in the top ten, and we (S. Africans), admire them for their golfing fame, quiet etiquette and winning skills.
3. Ronald Reagan. To my mind the most successful US President.
4. Winston Churchill is a lifelong hero of mine.
5. And, controversially, George Galloway, a Scottish rebel rouser MP who is one of the few men to show disdain for a US senate committee and told them (figuratively), to shove their heads back up their asses. Where was he when Joe McCarthy was around?

Well, good old George has a few question marks behind his name but to me he is indicative of the Scottish spirit.

Think about your 5 heroes Joeusers. Or more if you like. Just for fun.
