Some, like me, don't.

As I am a realist, and, a person who puts logical explanations above all else, I do not believe in the paranormal. Psychic phenomena, ouija boards and ghost-watching do not enter my world because I believe that there is an explanation for everything. I also think that the charlatans of the world have blown up the paranormal to the extent that it exists now. Members of spiritualist churches are chief amongst those who try to persuade us that Mom and Pop are a few steps away with messages of goodwill and love. Most of the spiritualists I have met have a quick tongue and a unique salesmanship akin to Daewoo salesmen. Furthermore, although some tremble and utter weird words whilst in trance (or something similar), it seems to me that they themselves are convinced they have a connection to the hereafter. I pity them but I am admiring of the comfort they bring to poor souls who need a little encouraging that Aunt Mabel is safe and well and still drinking gin and tonic.

I know. I jest. But not. Consider the following : An animal's body dies and rots and is rendered to dust. A human, who is an advanced animal, dies and has powers to communicate with earthly loved ones and even assures them that everything is okay and that they are watching out for you. Cue Mrs Mullins, an intermediary who assures you that Mom is fine and Dad has ample supplies of his Dutch pipe tobacco. It is not logical at all. And before you tell me about the soul and its powers to remain in limbo, or cross over, may I tell you that the soul lingers only because of its good deeds.

That sounds pretty heavy so I shall invite comment on my cynicism and say that the dead are truly blessed. My mother, who died at 84, remains in my mind every day. Hope she doesn't meet up with my father again but I fear he went the other way!

I agree there is an explanation for everything. Where I disagree with you is that if we dont know the explanation, then the phenomena must not exist. And I am still a realists. I just think when it comes to the paranormal, we live in a pre-copernicus understanding of the universe in that regard.

your cynicism is screaming out at me here adnauseum!

As one who does believe in such things, and having been at the receiving end of such 'activites' I won't try to convince you or change your way of thinking. The only thing I have to say is don't scoff at others who do believe and who are honest and not swindlers like many people out there who are. {this is not a reprimand, I'm just saying}

Just because you don't doesn't mean that the ones who do shouldn't, doesn't mean that it's not real. Unfortunately, many of us are too logical to experience such things because of that tendency to want to be in control all the time and to explain everything. Some things don't need an explanation.

I keep an open mind...that's all I can say. I'm not gullible by any means...but you show me evidence and then we'll discuss it.

LW: " if you believe in God at all..........(........or heaven or hell.....), then you believe in the paranormal."

Good comment: Strictly speaking, I agree, but the word paranormal is usually associated with the supernatural. I don't believe in heaven or hell---I was speaking figuratively. I have set views on what heaven and hell mean and they certainly are not mythical places "upstairs" or "downstairs".

Good comment from foreverserenity: I agree but with a mind like mine everything has to have an explanation.

Hey, that's alright! My hubby is the same way. He has to have an explanation and we often have heated, but friendly debates about what is real, not real, supernatural etc. Believe me, there are times I wonder how come we're still together when we seem to be so opposite!LOL! We really aren't though, he's the ying to my yang; his quiet, calm and sane to my insane, noisy discord!LOL! At other times I'm the calm, quiet to his insaness!

It's all good AN!

Have faith, but row away from the rocks!
